How to Pitch a Bookstore or Library on an Author Event
Propose one clear event shape. Show the store or library why people will come. Skip the novel length bio.
When to ask
- The store already stocks you, or you are in a warm conversation about stocking
- You have a real local or regional hook
- You can name a date window and show up for it
Wait if this would be your first cold email to the store. Ask about stocking first. Wait too if you have no plan to promote the event, because their staff alone is not a plan.
What to include
- 2 or 3 date windows
- The format: signing, talk with Q&A, or a book club visit
- Length, usually 45 to 60 minutes
- What you bring and what you need from them
- Your promotion plan: newsletter, social posts, local press, community groups
- An honest note on stock: Ingram, consignment, or you bring copies
What to attach
A one-sheet or a short event page, a cover image if you like, and a 2 or 3 sentence bio.
Libraries
Library systems often have centralized programming or purchasing, so find the right contact before you write. A list with contact routes saves hours.
After a yes
Send promo assets within a day. Tell your own list the same week. Afterward, thank the host, log what sold, and ask about next year.
