Is That Author Event Worth It? Break-Even Math for Book Tables

Do the math before you pay the table fee, not after.

Step 1: Know your profit per copy

Profit per copy is your price minus your unit print cost, not your royalty. Pull exact costs from your printer dashboard, including your author discount. Shipping to you is extra.

My numbers, using IngramSpark pricing: the workbook is $32.99 with a $4.90 unit cost, about $28 profit. The paperback memoir is $26.99 with a $7.32 cost, about $19. A dust jacket hardcover sells at $41.99 and nets about $29. My blended profit lands near $22 a copy.

Your formats will not earn alike, so what you handsell hardest should follow your margin column.

Step 2: The bundle discount trap

I sell any 3 books for 10% off. Print cost does not discount. On a paperback, profit drops from $19.00 to $16.30. That is a 14% profit cut from a 10% discount.

Bundles are still useful. They raise copies per sale. Just price them knowing the discount comes out of your margin, and consider a free bookmark or postcard instead.

Step 3: A worked event

A two day indoor market with 2,800 to 3,500 expected attendees, a booth around $250, table rental, and parking and food. True cost came to about $320. At $22 blended profit, break-even was about 15 copies over two days. I booked it.

The same market with a $600 booth and a hotel night costs around $950 and needs about 43 copies. Same market, different answer.

Step 4: Decide how much stock to bring

Stock deeper in the formats with strong margin that sell steadily. Do not run out of your best seller at 2 p.m. Check whether a larger author order drops your unit cost. Count what comes home, because unsold books are cash sitting in a bin.

Set a floor

Break-even tells you whether to try an event once. A repeat floor tells you whether it earns a second year. Mine is 10 copies.
